First to be excavated in Pompeii was the amphitheatre. It was built in 70 BC and was probably the first amphitheatre to be made of stone rather than wood.

People would go there to watch shows, sport, plays, concerts and religious ceremonies.

It had seats for between twelve and twenty thousand people who would have come from miles around.
